Visit our historic 1906 one-room schoolhouse and 1948 Fire Station (Camano's first!)
The turn of the 20th century inspired artistic movements which have left their effect today on Camano Island. The Arts and Crafts movement began in England in the 1880s but its distinct architecture and lifestyle soon caught on in the United States through organizations such as the Roycrofters.
Robin Hanks will discuss the impact of the Arts and Crafts movement on the homes of Camano as part of this year’s Historic Sites’ Tour. The talk is scheduled for 1 p.m. on August 26th at the Camano Schoolhouse.
Robin will be joined by her husband Richard Hanks who will speak on how the movement led to the conception of the first art community dubbed Waupello on the island in 1910 and the people behind it. The colony was established as a home for the various talents of Seattle artists, writers and naturalists.
